42 bird pecies recorded in Narayani river area

Nawalparasi — The annual waterfowl census conducted this year in the Narayani River area has recorded a positive trend, with 42 species of birds identified, one more than in the previous year, along with a significant rise in the total bird population.

According to DB Chaudhary, Bird Census Coordinator of Chitwan National Park’s West Sector, a total of 12,887 birds representing 42 species were counted in the Narayani River and nearby wetlands this year. In comparison, last year’s census documented 10,257 birds of 41 species. “This year, we observed the addition of one species and a notable increase in overall bird numbers,” Chaudhary said.

Nepal is home to 903 bird species, including 162 aquatic species. The census covered five survey sites within Chitwan National Park and areas along the Narayani River extending towards Nawalparasi. Key monitoring locations included Sighrauli, Pithauli, Amaltari, and the Triveni Gandak Barrage.

The survey also revealed a strong presence of migratory birds this year. Large numbers of birds migrating from Siberia and other northern regions to escape harsh winter conditions were recorded. Chaudhary estimated that the bird population in the surveyed areas increased by 3,339 compared to last year, indicating improving conditions for waterfowl in the region.
